The Secret Reason You Can't Tickle Yourself

The answer is prediction. Every time you move, a part of your brain called the cerebellum quietly predicts the sensation that move will cause — and then subtracts it. It's how you can walk without feeling like the ground is attacking your feet, and how you don't flinch at your own voice. Self-generated touch gets cancelled before it reaches your awareness.
Someone else's fingers, though, are unpredictable. Your brain can't forecast them, so it can't cancel them — and the full, unfiltered signal lands. That mismatch between expected and actual is exactly what tickling is.
It's the same system that lets you tell 'me' from 'not me' a thousand times a second. Tickling is just the funny edge case where you get to feel it working.
