Your Brain On Doomscrolling (Why You Can't Stop at 1AM)

It's 1am and you're still scrolling — and you're not even enjoying it anymore. So why can't you stop? It isn't laziness, and it isn't a broken will. You're running an ancient survival program, written millions of years before your phone existed, and modern apps have quietly hijacked it.

For almost all of human history, survival meant searching — scanning the treeline for food, the horizon for danger — so your brain evolved to reward the search itself with a hit of dopamine. But here's the part almost everyone gets wrong: dopamine doesn't spike when you get the reward. It spikes when you might get one. It's the chemistry of 'maybe' — and an endless feed is just an infinite stack of maybes, one swipe after another.

That pattern has a name: a variable reward schedule, the exact loop that runs a slot machine. In the 1950s the psychologist B.F. Skinner found animals pressed a lever calmly when it always gave food — but obsessively, for hours, when it paid out at random. The people who build your apps know this. As ex-Google ethicist Tristan Harris put it, every time you check your phone you're pulling a slot-machine lever — and the feed never ends on purpose, because an ending is a place you might put it down.

It isn't free, either. Every little hit is a tiny withdrawal from the same system that lets slower things — a book, a walk, a conversation — feel satisfying, until they start to feel flat by comparison. But the trap runs on 'maybe', so the way out is to remove it: kill the notifications, put the phone in another room so checking it costs a walk, and when you feel the pull, name it out loud — this is a slot machine, designed so I never really win. You were never weak. You were being farmed — and naming the program is the first crack in it.
